Sen. John Kerry’s primary challenger proposes debates

July 25, 2008 — The man giving John Kerry his first Democratic primary fight since his election to the Senate more than 20 years ago proposed a series of debates today.

Gloucester attorney Edward O’Reilly suggested town hall meetings in each of the state’s 14 counties. He also proposed formal debates at the five University of Massachusetts campuses, as well as some community colleges. And he urged Kerry to join in a set of proposed media debates.

Four years removed from challenging Republican George W. Bush for the presidency, O’Reilly is Kerry’s first primary opponent since winning his Senate seat in 1984.

A Kerry spokesman was noncommittal.
