August 25, 2008 — When Ed O'Reilly and Rosemary Cutler met a few weeks ago outside Fall River Celebrates America, Cutler, a resident of the J.A. O'Brien Sr. Apartments on Whipple Street, invited the US Senate candidate to speak at her community center.
On Monday, in between events in New Bedford and Sandwich, O'Reilly met with Cutler and about 25 other seniors over coffee and doughnuts at the apartment tower. O'Reilly, who touts his plans for universal health care and a green economy, told the room that he'll also fight for seniors so they don't have to choose between buying prescription drugs and heating their homes this winter.
O'Reilly, of Gloucester, faces incumbent John Kerry in the Sept. 16 Democratic primary for the US Senate.
He has had careers as a firefighter, lobsterman, corrections officer and criminal defense trial attorney. On Monday, he compared his humble childhood as the son of a firefighter to the wealthy longtime senator he hopes to unseat. "I know how to fight, and I know when to fight," O'Reilly said.
